The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing strains bilaterally after American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He has cocaine mills and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.
Growing Tensions and Accusations
Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump suggested similar use of force against Bogotá, stating the country faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure who enjoys creating the drug and selling it to America."
Although Colombia is the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the business.
A Deteriorating Alliance
Colombia for decades served as a key ally of the US in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from bipartisan support in the US capital, but relations have worsened markedly following Trump was elected.
The nation's drug trade is largely controlled by illegal armed groups like the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom laid down arms following a landmark accord.
Colombia's Strong Response
In response to a query whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me personally."
Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, rejected the accusations. "I am no illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.
"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a post.
"If US bombs target peasants, they will become numerous insurgents in the mountains. If they capture the nation's leader, whom many of the population holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the populace," the president cautioned.
From Fighter to Statesman
Petro spent a period in his early life belonging with the radical M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate he did not took part in armed clashes. Upon leaving the group, he took part in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming an influential politician. He was mayor of Bogotá before winning the presidency.
"I swore not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I would take up weapons once more," he vowed.
Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Rejection
Colombia's defense chief stated that the national leader's security detail was strengthened.
Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices from across the political spectrum have denounced the notion of American military action targeting Colombia.
Bilateral and Economic Pressure
American authorities revoked his travel authorization after he encouraged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. Months later, it placed economic restrictions on Petro, his wife and several associates.
At the same time as the US increased its military presence in the region and striking vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
