In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
